Storyworth alternatives, compared

The right Storyworth alternative depends on how your storyteller likes to tell stories and how long you can wait for the book. Remento and StoriedLife suit people who'd rather talk than write; Storii suits a parent without a smartphone; WhisperWishes is for a digital book with the whole family's voices, for a day that's coming up.

We make WhisperWishes, so read that section knowing it's ours. Everything else comes from each company's own website.

Storyworth

Storyworth emails or texts your storyteller a question each week for a year. They write their answers, or record them with a phone upgrade, and at the end you get a printed hardcover book.

Best for a parent who enjoys writing and a family happy to wait a year for a printed life story.

Worth knowing: telling stories by phone and books made with family and friends are both upgrades, not part of the base plan.

Remento

Remento sends a question a week, and your storyteller answers out loud instead of writing. The recordings become written stories, and QR codes in the printed book play each recording.

Best for a parent who'd rather talk than type, and a printed book with their voice a scan away.

Price: $99, which covers a year of questions and one color hardcover. To keep recording after the year, it's $99 a year or $12 a month. Extra copies are $69.

Worth knowing: one storyteller per book, in English or Spanish. Each extra storyteller is a separate book.

MyStories, from MyHeritage

MyStories sends weekly questions for a year and prints the answers as a hardcover book. It comes from MyHeritage, the family history company.

Best for families who already use MyHeritage, or who want one payment with no renewal.

Price: $79 for Basic, a hardcover with black-and-white pages and no voice recordings. $99 for Premium, in full color, with voice recordings you play from QR codes and a PDF copy. One payment, no renewal. Extra copies are $59.

Worth knowing: voice recordings only come with Premium.

StoriedLife

With StoriedLife, your storyteller talks or types with an interviewer called Eva, who asks follow-up questions. The conversations become chapters, and the printed book has QR codes that play their voice.

Best for someone who opens up more in a conversation than with a weekly question.

Price: yearly plans that renew: $59 for a PDF only, $98 with a softcover, $118 with a hardcover. Extra copies are $39 softcover and $59 hardcover.

Worth knowing: it's a membership that renews each year, so cancel it if you only want one book.

Storii

Storii calls your storyteller's phone on the days and times you choose and asks a question. They press 1 to record, and each call is transcribed. You can download the stories as an audiobook or a PDF.

Best for a grandparent with a landline or a basic phone, and no internet.

Worth knowing: you get audio and a PDF, not a printed book.

Meminto

Meminto sends a question a week by app or phone, and your storyteller answers out loud. They have up to two years to finish, and the hardcover book has QR codes that play their voice.

Best for a storyteller who wants more time, and a smaller book that's easy to hold.

Price: $99 for up to 100 pages, $149 for up to 300, $397 for three printed books and a digital copy. One payment, no subscription.

Worth knowing: the book is about 6 by 8 inches, smaller than most. Check shipping to your address before you order.

WhisperWishes

WhisperWishes makes a digital book for someone, for a day that's coming up. You talk with Smart Interview for a few minutes and add photos. For a family book, up to 12 people add their voices from one link, with no app, in any of 10+ languages. Press play on a page and you hear who said it.

Best for a birthday, anniversary, retirement, Eid or any day that's close, when you want the whole family in one book.

Price: from $9.99 a book. One price, no subscription.

Worth knowing: it's a short book, 2 to 8 pages, not a life story told over a year. It's digital: it opens on any phone from a link.
