Eid al-Fitr

Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting, and falls on the first day of the month after it. The day starts with a morning prayer. Then come new clothes, visits, sweet food and, in many families, Eidi: money or a small gift for the children.

Eid al-Adha

Eid al-Adha comes about 10 weeks later, during the Hajj pilgrimage. It remembers the Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son, and many families share meat with relatives, neighbors and people in need.

Why the date moves every year

The Islamic calendar follows the moon, and its year is about 11 days shorter than a calendar year. So each Eid comes about 11 days earlier than the year before. Some mosques wait for the moon to be seen locally, some follow Saudi Arabia's announcement and some use a calculated calendar, so two mosques in the same city can celebrate a day apart. The dates here follow the calculated calendar many North American mosques and schools use.
